Examiner for Driving Licences (EDL)
An examiner for driving licences is a person who tests the driving ability of people who want to obtain their driver’s licences
Minimum requirements to be trained as an Examiner for Driving Licences
- Minimum educational qualification of grade 12 or equivalent.
- No criminal record.
- The applicant must be employed by a Provincial Authority or Local Authority.
- The applicant must be in possession of the following driving licences (manual transmission) in order to attend and be trained in the different modules as indicated hereunder:-
- Grade A: Codes EC and A
- Grade B: Code EC
- Grade C: Codes B and A
- Grade D: Code EB
- Grade F: None
- Grade L: None
NB: The course for examiners of driving licences is progressive in nature and any person applying to attend a particular grade (module) of the entire course other than the most basic grade must produce proof of having completed the grades which precede the grade which has been applied for.
The unit standards for an examiner for driving licence are as follows:
- Elective: Examine for a driving licence (Heavy Motor Vehicle) – Grade B.
- Elective: Examine for a driving licence (Motorcycle) – Grade C.
- Elective: Examine for a driving licence (Light Motor Vehicle) – Grade D.
- Elective: Examine candidates for the learners drivers licence and eye test- Grade F and L.
Examiner of Vehicles (EoV)
An examiner of vehicles is a person who examines vehicles for roadworthiness.
The minimum requirements to become an examiner of vehicles are as follows:
- Minimum educational qualification of grade 10 or equivalent.
- No criminal record
- The applicant must be employed by a Local Authority, Provincial Authority or Private Test Station.
- The applicant must be in possession of the applicable driving licences (manual transmission) to attend the different grades of training as prescribed in the National Road Act, 1996 (Act 93 of 1996).
The unit standards for this course are as follows:
- Fundamental – Engage in sustained oral/ signed communication and evaluate spoken / signed texts (NQF level 4).
- Elective – Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of basic vehicle components (NQF level 4)
- Examine light motor vehicles for fitness and road-worthiness (NQF level 4).
- Examine vehicles for road-worthiness
External Integrated Summative Assessment
After the completion of all three components of the qualification, the learner must enrol for the External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA). The EISA will focus on the critical elements of all exit level outcomes and will be competency based. The EISA will be conducted through one written assessment incorporating practical element where possible. The EISA will be conducted at the QCTO accredited Assessment Centres. The qualification is awarded by the QCTO after the successful completion of the EISA.
In order to qualify for the external summative assessment, learners must provide proof of competency in all modules by means of statements of results and evidence of work experience.

Duration
The course is of twenty five week duration.
