WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT

Welcome to St Augustine College of South Africa, a leader in ethical education.  St Augustine was legally constituted under South African law as a provider of tertiary education in 1999; in 2008, it was canonically recognised by a decree of the South African Bishops’ Conference; in the same year, it was recognised by the Congregation for Catholic Education, as a Catholic University. St Augustine operates in conformity with the provisions of the Code of Canon Law and the 1990 Apostolic Constitution of St Pope John Paul II, Ex Corde Ecclesiae.
St Augustine College is both ‘university’ and ‘Catholic’.  As a ‘university’, it shares the ‘gaudium de veritate’; it is committed to the search for, and the communication of, the truth (the whole truth … about nature, man and God); it is institutionally autonomous, conducting research and teaching that is responsive to the problems and needs of its context: South Africa.  However, as ‘Catholic’, instead of reason being seen in opposition to faith, the two are united in their courageous exploration of ‘the riches of Revelation and of nature.’
The College is named after one of the greatest philosophers and theologians of Christianity, St Augustine of Hippo.  Apart from the important contribution he made to the early development of Christianity, St Augustine of Hippo was a son Africa.  This worthy patron noted that faith and reason are ‘the two forces that lead us to knowledge’.  St Augustine expressed his understanding of the relationship between faith and reason through two formulae: Crede ut intelligas (‘believe that you may understand’) – faith opens the way to step through the door of truth – but also, and inseparably, intellige ut credas (‘understand that you may believe’) – in order to find God and believe one must scrutinise truth.  It is this second formula that is the motto of our College.
Although Catholic, St Augustine is neither exclusivist nor parochial.  Indeed, at this critical juncture in the growth and development of our society, the challenge is to imbue in each individual – regardless of religious or cultural differences – an unequivocal respect for the dignity of the human person and a determination to build a more just and equitable society that will benefit all.  We believe that graduates of St Augustine are uniquely positioned to embrace that challenge.  Committed to the spirit and values of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition, the mission of St Augustine is to produce graduates who have learnt ‘to think rigorously, so as to act rightly and to serve humanity better’.
The academic community – staff and students – that we are attempting to build at St Augustine is one that is ‘characterised by mutual respect, sincere dialogue, and protection of the rights of individuals’; an academic community that ‘assists each of its members to achieve wholeness as human persons; in turn, everyone in the community helps in promoting unity, and each one, according to his or her role and capacity.’
Should our vision resonate with you… should you be interested in the quest for knowledge from a firm ethical base… please make contact – either electronically, or come and visit us at our beautiful campus in Victory Park.

After much prayer and research into distance learning management and practices, the Seminary opened its doors to the public in June 1996 . The original group of employees numbered three; the visionary founder and principal Dr Christopher Peppler, course writer, Quinton Howitt and  registrar/ administrator, Jenny Mason.
In 2002, the Seminary offices were moved from their original location at the Lonehill Village Church, to Rivonia in Sandton. We had 98 students enrolled and we were growing. The full-time staff complement had increased to  seven staff members. In 2006, Dr Reuben van Rensburg became the Principal and Dr Christopher Peppler continued to serve as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
The story of SATS is one of complete dependence on the Lord Jesus Christ for guidance and provision. The Seminary has a financial model which depends on student fees rather than on donor-funding for its sustainability but several larger projects have been funded by foundation grants. With each new project the Seminary has expanded and developed. Now, through the latest technologies, we can offer our students a variety of programmes, each supported by expert tutors and supervisors located in various places around the world.
Our students want to make a difference in God’s Kingdom. We have students in over 80 countries, all with a desire to earn a qualification that is Bible-based, Christ-centred and Spirit-led.
Technological advances continue to support our distance learning. The seminary is constantly investigating new and promising options in order to continue to offer a well-rounded learning experience with practical application.
Our graduation ceremonies are wonderful occasions where we hear the students’ stories of how they have been able to succeed via the distance learning model. In many cases they tell us that it was our strong, biblically-based approach that attracted them to study at SATS.

Vocational certificate courses are self-improvement, in-house programmes to assist those involved in ministry. There are no minimum entrance requirements. As a result, these vocational certificate courses are non-credit-bearing, although non-credit bearing recognition of prior learning (“RPL” for short) applies in South Africa.

How to apply

Study the various vocational certificate courses on offer and choose a course best suited to your needs. Should you require more information to make a decision, however, you could contact the Administration Department, where you would be assisted at making the right choice.
Complete the online application form. Should you not be able to complete an online application form, however, you could contact the Administration Department and request that you be supplied with a hard-copy (paper) application form by mail.
Applicants using the online system will be sent an automated e-mail to confirm their submission. Please note that confirmation of submission is NOT a confirmation of registration. The Administration Department will contact you as soon as your application has been processed.
We appreciate your interest in ATS and are looking forward to receiving your application.

WHAT DOES AFDA STAND FOR?
It seems that many people have been wondering, what does AFDA stand for?
It used to be an acronym for Africa Film Drama Art. Nowadays though, its not meant to stand for anything, its just AFDA, the South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance.
DOES AFDA ACCEPT FOREIGN STUDENTS?
Yes AFDA does have a number of foreign students from all over the world. These students are best off applying as early as possible as there is a lot more preparation necessary in terms of visas etc. Please note for all outside-Africa nationality students there is a slight variation in the Registration fee, and also a one-off payment that needs to be done with the very first instalment of fees.
Please refer to the Fee Structure. Unfortunately these are not likely candidates for our local government’s bursary opportunities. AFDA prides itself on its full cultural diversity.
All foreign applicants that did not write the NSC (National Senior Certificate) or attended a recognized university in their country, outside of South Africa, must have their school leaving results assessed and converted by either HESA (Higher Education South Africa) for school leaving certificates or SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) for post grad conversions. This process applies to all foreign applicants who did not attend any form of educational training in South Africa.
WHAT DEGREES ARE OFFERED AT AFDA?
Bachelor of Arts in Motion Picture Medium
Bachelor of Arts in Live Performance
BCom Business Innovation
Bachelor Computer Technology
Bachelor of Arts in Motion Picture (Honours)
Bachelor of Arts in Live Performance (Honours)
Master of Arts in Fine Arts Motion Picture (MAFA)
MUST I DO 4TH YEAR?
The 4th year, Honours, is optional and is by invitation only to current students who qualify with a pass mark of 85% in their 3rd year, or to RPL (Recognised Prior Learning) Applicants who need to submit the appropriate supporting documentation and previous practical work.  After three years you will graduate with a Bachelor of Motion Picture Medium Degree or a Bachelor of Live Performance Degree.
DOES AFDA OFFER BURSARIES?
The study funds of every registered and prospective student of the institution are the responsibility of the individual student. The institution will not enter into funding agreements or negotiations for funding on behalf of prospective students. AFDA helps registered students of the institution get onto possible funding lists of a few funders who prefer to work though the institution. This is also is subject to the availability of funders, as well as the current student meeting set criteria. Please view our Bursary Providers List under Key Documents on the main menu

WHAT IS RECOGNIZED PRIOR LEARNING (RPL)?
Recognised Prior Learning is a combination of either:

    • Your current formal educational qualifications at a Tertiary Institution that relate to the field, provided that you can demonstrate the core competencies, at both an intellectual and technical level, required by the AFDA Curriculum.
    • The number of years in a specific or related industry.
    • 5 years’ experience will validate consideration for entry into the Undergraduate program, and
    • 10 years’ experience is required for the Postgraduate program, with a portfolio demonstrating your intellectual and craft skills required for the AFDA Curriculum,
  • Any other certified achievements.  RPL’s are required to provide a letter of motivation, reflecting on their academic and practical knowledge of Motion Picture Medium and the particular disciplines they have chosen, as well as any other material that may support their application, according to the Discipline specific requirements. The complete application will be handed over to the relevant Departments. The applicant would be required to come in for an interview; this enables AFDA to know the extent of bridging necessary. Due to AFDA’s High Standard and Level of Training for Film, we would not want to place RPL Students unsuitably.
