Mathematics and Physics are also required courses in this study path. Solid-state physics, Relativity and Atomic Physics, Optics, Semiconductors, Electronics, Nuclear Physics, and Electricity are among the topics covered in the physics curriculum.

Lab work is an important part of the course because it teaches students how to measure things, how to use laboratory equipment, how to gather and analyze data, and how to utilize scientific procedures. Chemistry, Computer Science, and Applied Mathematics are examples of optional courses that should be taken.

Students have the option of taking optional courses consisting of physics projects during their third year of study, which expose them to problem-solving techniques to contemporary and relevant challenges in the area of physics. These are recommended for students who want to obtain hands-on experience in a variety of settings.

(4 YEARS FULL-TIME STUDY)

The new BSc Four-Year Program makes science and scientific-based degree programs more accessible by lowering the entrance criteria compared to BSc Three-Year programs. It provides intensive instruction to students in order to prepare them for further study in science and scientific-related degree programs. This means that students who enroll in this program will get the same results as students who enroll in existing BSc/degree programs. All candidates in grade 12 are eligible to participate in the program. The Extended Programme only accepts a small number of students.

The programme is offered in English on both the Hatfield campus and the Mamelodi campus. Successful candidates will be placed on either the Hatfield Campus or the Mamelodi Campus, depending on the availability of facilities.

The initial part of the initiative will last for 18 months (3 semesters). Students who successfully complete the program will have earned credits comparable to Year 1 Semester 1 of the Three Year Programme and will be eligible to enroll in the Three Year Programme’s Year 1 Semester 2 modules. Additional enrichment components, such as lab work, computer-aided learning, seminars, and small-group tutorials, are provided in the extended courses to assist students.

Mathematical Sciences, Biological and Agricultural Sciences, Veterinary Biology, and Physical Sciences are the four streams of the program. Students interested in engineering should apply to the Physical Science stream, whereas students interested in health sciences should apply to the Biological Sciences stream. At the end of the first semester, students can transfer from one stream to another in the BSc Four Year Program.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

  • National Senior Certificate (NSC)
  • Mathematical Literacy will not be accepted
  • Mathematics (50%-59%) or 3 (40%-49%) only if a 4 was obtained for Physical Sciences.
  • Physical Science 4 (50%-59%) or 3 (40%-49%) only if a 4 was obtained for Mathematics.
  • English or Afrikaans: (50%-59%)
  • Life Orientation: (50%-59%) (Excluded when calculating the APS)
  • Two other subjects: (50%-59%)
  • An Admission Points Score (APS) of at least 22
  • Admissions test

Please note that these results do not guarantee that students will be admitted to the Extended Program instead of the regular BSc programs if they do not match the prerequisites. The results of the admission test, which all applicants must take, are used to make further decisions.
